Supreme Court of Canada judge fell and injured his ribs, but top court says he remains on the job
Supreme Court of Canada Justice Nicholas Kasirer has had a fall that injured his ribs and kept him from participating in a Toronto legal conference where he was scheduled to speak, but the top court told Law360 Canada the Quebec jurist is continuing to “fulfil his duties at the court and there has been no impact on his work.”

Canada, Ukraine, U.K., Sweden file case with aviation council over downing of Ukraine Flight PS752
On the fourth anniversary of Iran’s military shooting down a commercial airliner with dozens of Canadian and other foreign civilians aboard, Ottawa announced it has filed a joint case with three other countries against Iran at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council, requesting a decision under art. 84 of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention).

The decision of Justice Andrew J. Goodman in Spencer v. Martin and Hillyer 2023 ONSC 6353 highlights the challenge of balancing issues of privilege and confidentiality with the principles of contractual interpretation requiring contracts to be read in their entirety. The successful defendant of a personal injury action brought the application at bar, seeking an unredacted copy of the adverse costs insurance policy belonging to the plaintiff’s counsel, after having not received their costs.

Federal Court mandates AI-usage disclosure; won’t use automated decision-making tools for now
The Federal Court is actively exploring how its judges and law clerks can use artificial intelligence tools to enhance the “efficiency and fairness of the legal system,” but Chief Justice Paul Crampton says the national trial court “will not use AI, and more specifically automated decision-making tools, to make its decisions or render its judgments, without first engaging in public consultations.”

Canada, Alberta sign $1B agreement to improve province’s health-care system by 2026
Canada’s Health Minister Mark Holland and Alberta’s Health Minister Adriana LaGrange have announced a bilateral agreement for the investment of $1.06 billion over the next three years for health care in the province, part of a larger 10-year plan of collaboration. The federal government will fund $285 million per year in addition to the previously announced $70 million toward mental health and substance abuse.
