Court of Appeal has upheld a finding that British Columbia has jurisdiction over Altria Group, Inc., the parent company of Phillip Morris USA, in a proposed class action concerning allegations that the company participated in a conspiracy to falsely market JUUL e-cigarettes to young people as safe.

SCC rejects ‘rule’ for appellate review of credibility & reliability findings in sex assault cases
In a judgment welcomed by legal advocates for women on International Women’s Day, the Supreme Court of Canada has rejected a defence plea to recognize a new “rule” against trial judges’ reliance on “ungrounded common-sense assumptions” in sexual assault and other criminal cases that would give rise to an error of law when appellate courts are reviewing lower courts’ credibility and reliability findings.

CRA should redefine ‘disability’ in Income Tax Act, says advisory group
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) should update the current definition of disability in the Income Tax Act to reflect what it calls a more “biopsychosocial” model of disability, according to the 2023 annual report by the agency’s Disability Advisory Committee (DAC).
