I’ve been following the ongoing evolution of paralegal licensure across other Canadian provinces and in select U.S. states for some time now. As an Ontario paralegal, it remains a privilege to be part of a licensed legal profession, particularly in a jurisdiction that was not only the first law society in Canada, but the first law society in the world to regulate and license paralegals.

The Carney government has opted to stick with the predecessor Liberal government’s requirement that the prime minister be handed a shortlist of at least three bilingual qualified candidates to fill an impending western/northern vacancy on the Supreme Court of Canada, despite the inability of the advisory committee that created the shortlist for the last such vacancy to recommend more than two bilingual qualified jurists.

On March 25, the Ontario government announced some temporary relief for buyers who are purchasing new homes. The harmonized sales tax (HST) rebate in Ontario is being expanded to all buyers to a maximum of $130,000. Both provincial and federal governments will eat up the entire 13 per cent HST. The province will cover its eight per cent, and federal will cover five per cent of the HST.

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford have announced a new partnership to build more affordable homes, infrastructure and transit. The PM’s office (PMO) said the partnership will reduce taxes and fees for a home in the province by up to $200,000. As well, it is the federal government’s first partnership through the Build Communities Strong Fund.

When a party assigns its interest in an agreement to purchase a property, do they retain any interest in the underlying property? In many assignment agreements, the assignor relinquishes all right, title and interest in the original purchase agreement in favour of the assignee. The practical consequence of such broad language is that the assignor may be left without any proprietary claim to the property if the assignee subsequently fails to fulfil its obligations under the assignment agreement.
