CRIMINAL CODE OFFENCES - Offences against public order - Offences in relation to terrorism

Law360 Canada ( June 19, 2018, 10:12 AM EDT) -- Trial of the 30-year-old accused charged with nine counts of committing indictable offences for the benefit of a terrorist group. The underlying offences were attempted murder, assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, and carrying a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence. The accused attended at a Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre armed with a knife. He immediately began to attack the military personnel he encountered. He wounded several persons before he was overpowered and subdued. The accused had a long history of mental illness. He suffered from schizophrenia and had become radicalized on his own. He believed that killing Canadian military personnel was justified because the military was fighting in Muslim lands. The Crown did not allege the accused was connected to any other group in relation to the attack. The parties agreed the accused should be found not criminally responsible for the underlying offences....
