Ali was found guilty of robbing a young woman who was using an automated teller machine and threatened to stab her with a screwdriver. The judge imposed a nine-month conditional sentence, followed by 12 months’ probation. She considered a conditional sentence to be the most appropriate sentence on the bases that it had punitive aspects, would likely deter Ali and others of like mind if it contained strict conditions, and would permit him to become engaged with his community through work service or meeting with a conditional sentence supervisor....
