SENTENCING - Child pornography - Robbery and extortion

Law360 Canada ( December 14, 2023, 6:24 AM EST) -- Sentencing of Nassr who was found guilty by jury of extortion, harassment by repeated telecommunications of Gerald Christopher (Christopher) and distributing written child pornography. Nassr engaged in sexual communications online with suspected pedophiles while posing as a teenage girl. He met his targets and video-recorded their interaction and then posted it on his website and social media channel. Nassr produced and posted online numerous episodes, including his confrontation with Christopher, whose video was reported to the police by Christopher’s ex-wife which led to Nassr's investigation and subsequent arrest. Nassr claimed that his activities aimed to inform the public of the risks to children associated with online social media platforms. The Crown sought a global sentence of four years comprised of 1.5 years each for making and distributing written child pornography to run consecutive to one another; one year for extortion and six months for harassing communications concurrent with the latter sentences to run consecutive to the sentences imposed for the child pornography offences; ancillary orders including a DNA order; an order under s. 161 of the Criminal Code of Canada, a forfeiture order on devices seized and a Sexual Offender Information Registration Act (SOIRA) order. Nassr sought a sentence in the range of a suspended sentence plus probation on the low end and a conditional sentence of two years less a day on the high-end. Nassr was not a first offender and had expressed no remorse or regret for his actions as he did not acknowledge that his conduct had caused harm to others....
