According to the law society, Justice Sherr has worked to improve access to justice for children and families for more than 40 years.
Called to the bar in 1981, he practised primarily in family law and was a partner at Ulrich & Sherr before his appointment to the Ontario Court of Justice in 2005. Since then, he has written more than 600 decisions, many of which are frequently cited in family and child protection matters in Ontario and other jurisdictions.
Justice Sherr has also contributed extensively to legal education and reform. He mentored lawyers and judges, and co-chaired the Intensive Child Protection Training Primer, a multi-day course for child protection lawyers established in 2010 with Lorne Glass.
In recognition of his work, Justice Sherr received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Association of Ontario Judges in 2018 and the Ontario Bar Association’s Award for Excellence in Family Law in 2020.
The LSO awards honorary doctorates each year to distinguished individuals in recognition of outstanding achievements in the legal profession, the rule of law or the cause of justice.
