SCC to visit Halifax in 2027, marking third sitting outside Ottawa

Law360 Canada (September 21, 2026, 4:07 PM EDT) -- The Supreme Court of Canada is set to visit Halifax for five days in September 2027 to hear appeals and meet with the public, according to a Sept. 21 release.

“These visits allow Canadians to see the court in action, learn more about how our justice system works and engage directly with members of the court. We are delighted to have the opportunity to visit Halifax and connect with Nova Scotians,” Chief Justice Richard Wagner said in the release.

The Halifax visit will mark the third time the Supreme Court has sat outside Ottawa. In 2019, the Supreme Court of Canada visited Winnipeg to hear two appeals and meet with Manitobans and various communities, marking the first time the court sat outside of Ottawa. The court also visited Quebec City in 2022.

“As it did while in Winnipeg and Quebec City, the court will participate in a variety of activities with members of the public, students and the legal community,” the release said.

Chief Justice of Nova Scotia Michael Wood said the visit would be a unique opportunity for Nova Scotians to see the Supreme Court’s work firsthand.

“The court’s presence in Halifax will help build meaningful connections with the public and further strengthen confidence in the administration of justice,” Wood said.
