Law360 Canada ( April 30, 2025, 12:06 PM EDT) -- Appeal by Ordonio from conviction for first-degree murder for his involvement in stabbing death of Hsin. Hsin was found dead in her car. This appeal case concerned the admissibility of a statement made by Ordonio during a 13-hour police interrogation. Ordonio was convicted of first-degree murder based substantially on this statement. The police had used the Reid technique during Ordonio’s interrogation, which he argued rendered his statement involuntary. On appeal, Ordonio argued the trial judge erred in admitting the statement, in instructing the jury how to assess the statement’s reliability, and by failing to admit ante-mortem statements by Hsin.
