N.W.T. says public health emergency continuing until Sept. 1

Law360 Canada (August 20, 2020, 1:49 PM EDT) -- The government of the Northwest Territories has extended its territory-wide public health emergency through Sept. 1.

The extension comes under the Northwest Territories’ Public Health Act on the advice of chief public health officer (CPHO) Dr. Kami Kandola, according to a public service announcement issued by the government Aug. 18.

“The risk to the N.W.T. remains significant as increases in cases in southern Canada continue to grow — particularly within our territory’s closest provincial neighbours,” the announcement warns. “Reintroduction is most likely to occur as a result of travel from locales with community transmission.”

Travel within the N.W.T. remains restricted upon arrival, with limited exceptions, and it is an offence to travel within the territory without an exemption under the public health orders. Everyone entering the N.W.T. is required to self-isolate for 14 days in Yellowknife, Inuvik, Hay River or Fort Smith with few exceptions.
