According to a Sept. 9 government news release, the proposed amendments to Children’s Law Act’s Child Support Regulations would “make the regulations more accessible” and “expand the scope of circumstances in which families can use the recalculation program.”
More specifically, the changes would give “more families, in more circumstances” the ability to use the free government service, which is seen as a possible alternative to taking a matter to court. The planned amendments would also “reduce the number of variation applications made to the court.”
The release notes that the program recalculates eligible child support orders and agreements annually in a bid to “ensure that children … continue to receive the amount of support” to which they are entitled.
P.E.I. Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Public Safety Bloyce Thompson said the province is “always working to make sure that provincial laws are up to date and modernized for the benefit of our residents.”
“The changes that are being put forward are in line with national trends towards expanding the scope around recalculation, and we look forward to hearing from the public on the changes that are being presented,” said Thompson in a statement.
