B.C. to expand family law network with 2 new clinics

Law360 Canada (July 9, 2026, 3:35 PM EDT) -- British Columbia has announced plans to open two new family law clinics to bring more in-person legal services to survivors of family violence.

The new clinics, which will support people in Kamloops and Prince George, B.C., are part of the Family Law Centre network, a provincially funded service that provides free, trauma-informed legal support to people experiencing family violence.

The new facilities, which are expected to open in late summer, add to existing clinics in Surrey and Victoria.

“People experiencing family violence are often dealing with fear, uncertainty and urgent legal issues,” said B.C. Attorney General Niki Sharma. “Through the Family Law Centre, we are making it easier to access free legal support in person, closer to home, so people can find safety, stability and a path forward.”

The clinics, which are operated by Legal Aid B.C., offer free legal representation and services that are necessary to stabilize clients’ legal situation. Clients work with a lawyer and an advocate who support them throughout their family law case, and they can get help with protection orders, parenting matters such as denial of parenting time, and child support.

Staff can also connect clients with other services, such as counselling, Indigenous cultural supports, parenting support programs, settlement services and victim services. Last month, B.C. also updated the list of eligible legal issues the clinics could deal with to include parenting arrangements.

To access Family Law Centre services, clients must be experiencing family violence and have at least one additional eligible legal issue.

The clinics will prioritize survivors in the community who have fled an abusive partner within the past six months.
