Law360 Canada (September 28, 2026, 2:16 PM EDT) -- Alberta has announced four judicial appointments, including one applications judge to the Court of King’s Bench and three justices to the Alberta Court of Justice.
According to the province,
Marie Strauss has been appointed an applications judge in Edmonton, effective Oct. 13.
Jean-Pascal Siewe will join the Alberta Court of Justice in the Calgary Criminal Division/Calgary Region effective Sept. 29, while
Christian Banks and
Timothy Burnham will serve in the Northern Region effective Oct. 26 and Dec. 1, respectively.
Strauss has served as assistant deputy minister of Alberta Justice’s Legal Services Division since January 2025. She previously held senior roles with the division and Court of Queen’s Bench Administration and worked as senior legal counsel at the University of Alberta. She earned her law degree from the University of Alberta and previously practised civil and commercial litigation
Bishop and McKenzie LLP. She was appointed King’s Council in January 2026.
Siewe has served as bilingual resolution counsel with the Court of King’s Bench since 2021, handling family law matters in English and French. He previously operated a practice focused on family, immigration, real estate, criminal and civil law. He attended the College of Law and BPP Law School in London and completed his accreditation certification with the Federation of Law Societies of Canada in 2011.
Banks has more than 28 years of experience as a criminal trial lawyer and currently practises with
Banks Gubbins Tomlinson Law Offices in Grande Prairie. He has also served on the Legal Aid Alberta Appeals Committee and as a mentor through the Law Society of Alberta. Banks earned his law degree from the University of Ottawa.
Burnham has practised with
Burnham Law Group since 2006 and became a partner in 2009. His experience includes family law, mediation and civil litigation, and his current practice focuses on corporate law, estate planning and real estate. He served as a mediator with Alberta Justice Resolution Services from 2008 to 2017. He earned his law degree from the University of Alberta.
